What Magnification Numbers Actually Mean
The magnification claim (12x, 15x, 20x) is meaningless without knowing the reference point. Most manufacturers use 35mm full-frame equivalent — a 20x macro on one lens may produce a smaller effective subject size than a 12x on another. We tested with standardized test targets to establish actual reproduction ratios.
True macro is 1:1 reproduction — the subject fills the sensor at life size. For a smartphone sensor (typically 1/2.5" to 1/1.3"), 1:1 means the subject is about 8-12mm wide. The best "20x" clips we tested achieved approximately 0.8:1 — close but not true macro. The best "12x" clips we tested achieved approximately 0.6:1.

Actual reproduction: 0.72:1. The sharpest center performance we tested. Slight barrel distortion — actually useful for PCB work as it makes solder joints appear more 3D. Requires steady hands or a phone tripod. $35.
Best for Jewelry: CamJJ 15x with LED
Built-in LED ring light is the differentiator. Removes shadowing when shooting reflective jewelry. Actual reproduction: 0.65:1. Slightly warm color cast that is correctable in post. $22.
What to Avoid
- Magnetic clip-on lens kits: The magnetic attachment is convenient but causes chromatic aberration at edges. Stick to physical clip mechanisms.
- Any lens with "up to 60x" marketing: Beyond 20x, optical quality degrades to unusable levels regardless of price. "Digital zoom enhancement" claims are marketing fiction.
